Client Profile: Mera Brothers Oysters Aim to Grow Shellfish Industry in NC

In the heart of Carteret County, on the East Coast of North Carolina, lie numerous sounds, marshlands, and estuarine rivers, housing some of the nation’s most sought-after oysters. Harkers Island, Jarrett Bay, and the North River provide an ideal environment for both oyster farms and wild oyster reefs.
Thread Capital, a subsidiary of the North Carolina Rural Center, and Array Community Development Corporation announced the launch of a new loan program designed to foster shellfish aquaculture in coastal North Carolina. The Shellfish Growers Loan Program, created in partnership with the North Carolina Coastal Federation, will provide loans of up to $50,000 to qualified shellfish growers in all coastal counties in the state.
